As our readers know, we love taking food tours in other cities around the world. Our latest trip took us to Miami, Florida were we had the opportunity to hop on a culinary tour in South Beach hosted by Miami Culinary Tours. This company not only does food tours in South Beach, but they also host tours in Little Havana and the Design District.
Our guide was Christina, and she introduced herself via text an hour before the tour – a nice touch! During the tour, Christina provided a fun and interactive look at the history, culture and architecture of the area. She told us about how Miami was founded, the reason for all of the signature Art Deco architecture throughout the area, and took us by Versace’s mansion. We loved her energy and friendly personality!
We met up with our fellow hungry sojourners at a vibrant local watering hole, Bolivar Restaurant Bar. Here we had three different tastings including two food bites and one unique local beverage. The food included a traditional Columbian beef and smoked potato empanada served with a very spicy hot pepper sauce. We also tried a Peruvian ceviche with a mango sauce and cancha (corn nuts).
To cool down the flavors and give us a taste of a unique local beverage, we also tried a chilled beer and soda mixed drink. It starts with the number one selling beer in Columbia, Cerveza Aguila. It is then mixed half-and-half with a carbonated soda that tastes like a light cream soda with hints of tea. We were skeptical, but it turned out to be tasty!
In terms of flavor, Havana 1947, our second stop, was hands down the best. We were served a slow cooked, melt-in-your-mouth Ropa Vieja, which is shredded beef in a garlic and tomato sauce. It was one of the best bites of our entire trip to Miami! We also sampled delicious Tostones, which are fried plantains with salt. The food here represented the Cuban culture, which is found throughout South Florida. While we were there, we couldn’t resist ordering an a la carte classic Mojito made with real sugar cane and muddled mint.
Our last savory tasting was at Naked Taco, a festive Mexican restaurant known for their delicious street tacos. We tried a seasoned chicken taco on a flour tortilla with pico de gallo. Our guide, Christina, led us in a fun toast with our tequila orange shots.
No Miami food tour would be complete without a delicious, creamy gelato! Deemed the “Best Gelato in Miami Beach” by food critic Marie Rosen, Mammamia has been serving up Italian desserts since 1911. We tried the “Variegato Amarena” flavor, which is made with rich and juicy black cherries. It was absolutely amazing, and we could have eaten a whole tub of it!
We loved this cultural and culinary experience in South Beach! Thanks to Miami Culinary Tours for a fun and delicious afternoon. We hope to see you in Colorado Springs whenever you are able to visit!
Cheers, Samantha
