Nestled at the base of Pikes Peak is Colorado Springs, home to the U.S. Olympic Committee, U.S. Olympic Training Center, and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum. It’s no wonder we’re known as the “City for Champions!”
The U.S. Olympic Committee selected Colorado Springs from a number of other host city candidates in 1979. The city was chosen based on a number of factors including our high amount of community support, our excellent sports facilities and infrastructure, mild climate, and the presence of the U.S. Air Force Academy. Also, it certainly doesn’t hurt that our high elevation provides a natural advantage for endurance training, as athletes can benefit from improved performance when they compete at lower elevations.
The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum opened in the summer of 2020. It soon became an absolute must-experience attraction here in Colorado Springs. This is truly an incredible place and is not only celebrated throughout our local community but throughout our nation as well. In fact the very year that it opened, USA Today named it the country’s “Best New Attraction.”
While our Olympic and Paralympic athletes have worked so hard to represent our great nation on the international stage for many years, we’re proud to have such a beautiful place to commemorate and celebrate their achievements, right here at the base of Pikes Peak!
We’ve compiled a few events in Colorado Springs that will help you cheer on Team USA and feel a part of the international games!
Kick off the Paris games in the beautiful lobby of the museum where the opening ceremony will be streamed live on their 40′ floor-to-ceiling LED wall. Order a bite to eat from Flame Café via mobile app.
Savor the flavors of the international host cities with a unique pop-up food tour in downtown Colorado Springs! Your tour guide will lead you through tastings at four delicious restaurants, enough for lunch! After the food tour, you will be given an admission ticket to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum.
Happening daily, you will have the opportunity to meet at least one Olympic athlete and hear their stories of sacrifice, dedication, and pursuit of a gold medal. These athletes are not only dedicated sportsmen and women, they are also upstanding citizens who inspire others toward greatness. Meet and greets are included with museum admission tickets.
Downtown Colorado Springs will be abuzz with an all-day festival to celebrate the games. Starting with the Rocky Mountain 5K (starting at 9:30am), the celebration will continue at the museum with sports and cultural demonstrations, live music, food, and community vendors.
Watch as local artist Bernard Sandoval paints a vibrant Olympic-themed piece live at the museum. Sandoval has captured on canvas famous U.S. athletes including Peggy Fleming, Jesse Owens, Bonnie Blair, Ruben Gonzalez, and Jim Thorpe. Viewing included in general admission ticket to the museum.
Watch the Paris Games live on a giant screen outside the museum! Bring your red, white, and blue to cheer on Team USA. Mobile ordering available through Flame Café.
Celebrate the accomplishments of our U.S. athletes as they finish the Summer Games in Paris and watch the closing ceremonies.
Kickoff the Paralympic Games by watching the Opening Ceremony on the 40′ LED display in the museum. Order snacks from Flame Café.
Cheer on our Paralympic athletes one last time during this finale to the Summer 2024 Games.
Get into the spirit of our champions by participating in one or all of these events! We look forward to seeing you out there!
